CMS Issues Final Rule Updating Medicare’s Physician Fee Schedule for 2017

Rule Includes Expansion of Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) Model

The CMS' final rule updating the Physician Fee Schedule (PFS) for 2017 includes an expansion of the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program Model in 2018.  The expansion of the model was included in the Agency’s proposed rule earlier this summer and would make it the first preventative services model under CMS’ Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) to be incorporated into the Medicare program.  In a statement, CMS Acting Administrator Slavitt suggested that “[b]y better valuing primary care, behavioral health, and prevention models like the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program expanded model, we help beneficiaries access the services they need to stay well and live long, healthy lives.”  The payment structure for the expanded MDPP model is expected to be finalized in 2017 through the rulemaking process.  Payment for MDPP services are expected to begin in 2018.  Mehlman Castagnetti Rosen & Thomas and Kasper Cardinale Consulting will produce a detailed analysis of this final rule for NRAA members in the very near future.
