Quality of Life Measurement to Intervention in Pediatric Dialysis

Quality of life (QOL) is generally defined as a “broad multidimensional concept that usually includes subjective evaluations of both positive and negative aspects of life,” while health-related quality of life is “..aspects of overall quality of life that can be clearly shown to affect health—either physical or mental.” In the area of Renal dialysis, we know that quality of life has been associated with adherence and morbidity/mortality rates. Therefore, it is imperative that we consider patients’ QOL when working with this population. In addition to a general discussion of quality of life, we will also review assessment tools to measure patient QOL, as well as consider interventions to improve QOL – and ideally health outcomes- for these patients.

Learning Objectives
  • Explain the importance of measuring quality of life in this pediatric population.
  • Identify appropriate assessment tools to measure QOL.
  • Describe interventions aimed at improving quality of life.

Then, we’ll examine a model which will enable you to diagnose and resolve conflict. Next we’ll explore communication techniques founded in mutual respect and responsibility. Finally, we’ll discuss listening techniques that can multiply your effectiveness.
